President Adama Barrow has ordered the establishment of an independent Board of Inquiry (BOI) to investigate online allegations leveled against the former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General (Rtd) Mamat O.A. Cham, by his former Personal Assistant, Ex-Sergeant Saine Modou.
The social media controversy, which heavily circulated across various digital platforms, recently culminated in the resignation of Lieutenant General Cham from his post as head of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF).

In a statement issued on June 2nd 2026, the GAF High Command emphasized that while the claims sparked high-profile administrative changes, no substantive evidence has yet been established regarding the allegations.
Due to the gravity of the matter, President Barrow, as Commander-in-Chief, mandated the independent probe to preserve public trust and uphold institutional accountability.
The Military leadership stated they will not pre-empt the findings, vowing to allow the BOI space to conduct a thorough, impartial, and comprehensive inquiry.
In a statement addressing the situation, the GAF reminded citizens of its standing as one of the country's most trusted public bodies, referencing independent public perception surveys by the Centre for Policy Research and Strategic Studies (CEPRASS).
The military command assured the public that the ongoing investigation has not disrupted the nation's security apparatus.
“At this time, there is no situation arising from the matter in question that undermines operational effectiveness, command cohesion, or the routine functioning of the High Command” the GAF statement read.
The military authority urged the public to exercise restraint while awaiting the final recommendations of the Board of Inquiry, reiterating its unwavering commitment to constitutional discipline and the national interest of The Gambia.
