When running methanol race fuel, it’s extremely important to run some form of anti-corrosive lubricant through the fuel system and intake manifold after use.
Methanol left sitting in fuel lines, the intake, or cylinders can cause corrosion if the correct shutdown procedure isn’t followed. Corrosion in the cylinders can quickly damage the bore and rings, leading to excessive blow-by and causing the engine to spew oil out of the breathers.
Lucky for Bret, this one was caught in time. We were able to give it a quick hone, and while the engine is apart for the first time in three years, we’ll freshen it up with a new set of bearings as well.
Quick tip for the lazy guys who forget their methanol shutdown procedure:
Empty the fuel tank, put some unleaded in it, and try to start the engine. That’ll help flush the methanol out instead of letting it sit there and cause trouble.
Little habits like this can be the difference between a quick freshen-up and a very expensive repair.
