The Institut de France sits right on the Seine in Paris, it’s one of the city’s most important historic buildings.

Originally built as the Collège des Quatre Nations, construction began in 1662 under the direction of Cardinal Mazarin. The building was completed in 1688, taking around 26 years to finish

Today, it houses some of France’s most important academic institutions, including the Académie Française, 'the guardians of the French language.'

Architecturally, it’s a standout example of French Baroque design. The symmetry, grand columns, and that striking dome create a sense of balance and authority. It’s refined without being over the top… powerful without trying too hard.

Set against the movement of Paris, the river, the traffic, the constant flow of people, it somehow manages to feel completely still.
