This week's feature coffee was grown by Francis Muigai Muru. This lot tastes like black currant and caramel!
Francis Muigai Muru has been farming coffee since 2011 when he inherited a portion of his farm. Francis cultivates primarily SL28, Batian and Ruiru 11 on Fram Farm. ‘SL’ varieties are cultivars originally released by Scott Agricultural Laboratories (SAL) in the 1930s and 1940s. They soon became the go-to trees for many growers in Kenya due to their deep root structure, which allows them to maximize scarce water resources and flourish even without irrigation. They are cultivated with a serious eye to sustainability and Good Agricultural Practices, with minimal environmental impact where possible.

This week's feature coffee tastes like chocolate and red apple, and it was grown by Bertha Nelly Narvaez in Suaza, a municipality in Colombia's Huila Department. It comprises predominantly Caturra variety coffee. Caturra is a cultivar of the Arabica coffee plant that originated as a spontaneous mutation of the Bourbon variety. Notable for its smaller size compared to other Arabica varieties, Caturra is well-suited for cultivation in higher-altitude regions, and the compact nature of the plant facilitates easier management. Caturra is recognized for its bright acidity and a clean, sweet cup profile, making it a popular choice in the production of specialty coffee.

Brand new lot for subscribers this week from Moanti Ise, and it tastes like chocolate and pear. Moanti Ise is a coffee producer from the Dunattina Region of Papua New Guinea, and is one of very few recognised female coffee entrepreneurs, having successfully established a parchment buying network within her own community and building her business from a “scale on the road” to having several buying points and village setting storage facilities. This coffee is grown almost entirely in small coffee gardens situated on mountain ridges and farmed by a network of smallholder producers in the Henganofi District of the Eastern Highlands Province. Cherries are handpicked and pulped at farm level using hand eco pulpers before being sun dried on raised beds. Once dried the parchment is collected and taken to one of the Moanti buying points and on to the Moanti Dry Mill for processing.
