Are we serious about sustainability , or just comfortable talking about it?
Sustainability Isn’t Failing , We Are.
After attending a sustainability seminar at Curtin University and visiting its waste management facilities, one thing became very clear:
The problem isn’t the system. It’s us.
We’ve built the infrastructure.
We’ve designed the processes.
We’ve invested real money into sustainability.
Curtin, like many institutions, is actively working toward a sustainable future.
And yet — the system still struggles.
Why?
Because people don’t do the most basic thing right:
using the correct bin.
Let that sink in.
We talk about climate change, circular economy, ESG
but fail at something as simple as waste segregation.
And that one careless action doesn’t stay small:
* Entire recycling streams get contaminated
* Costs increase across operations
* Valuable materials are lost
* Systems designed to work… stop working
Not because they’re broken
but because we are careless.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Sustainability doesn’t lack solutions. It lacks responsible participation.
Even the economics prove it.
Waste bins alone can cost anywhere from **$350 to $11,500** — serious investment placed into systems that rely entirely on human behavior.
And still, we misuse them.
At the same time, waste management remains one of the most stable industries.
Even during COVID-19, it didn’t stop because waste doesn’t stop.
So the real question is:
Are we serious about sustainability or just comfortable talking about it?
Because right now, it feels like we want the benefits of sustainability
without the responsibility that comes with it.
And until that changes,
No policy will fix it.
No technology will save it.
No investment will sustain it.
Because in the end,
You cannot build a sustainable world with unsustainable habits.
