Taking flight for the 2026 Great Cocky Count

NACC NRM will deliver BirdLife WAโ€™s Great Cocky Count across the Mid West on 12 April 2026, coordinating activities in the Shires of Irwin and Chapman Valley. The event forms part of the House and Home: Saving Native Species initiative, led by NACC NRM and sponsored by Mitsui E&P (MEPAU) and Beach Energy.

The program has already achieved several benefits. A critically endangered flowering bush in the Mid West has gone from a single known plant to multiple healthy seedlings, providing a vital food source for Carnabyโ€™s cockatoos. European honey bees have also been removed from tree hollows, creating more safe nesting spaces for the cockatoos.

Ahead of the count, NACC NRM hosted a Great Cocky Count workshop in Geraldton, led by Biodiversity Program Coordinator Jarna Kendle. BirdLife volunteers, including Alice Bishop and Heather Beswick, as well as Merryn Pryor, BirdLifeโ€™s WA Black Cockatoo Project Coordinator, joined the session to share knowledge and tips with participants.

The Great Cocky Count brings communities together across Western Australia, helping track Carnabyโ€™s cockatoo populations. With these birds raising only one chick per season, every observation is critical, giving volunteers a direct role in conservation efforts.

If you would like to take part in the 2026 count, you may follow this late registration link to sign up - https://birdlife.org.au/late-registrations/

MEPAU had the opportunity to speak with Mid West students from Champion Bay Academy, who shared their aspirations for employment and further training, expressing their excitement about the future.

The morning started with an Acknowledgement of Country by Wayne Bromfield, an inspiring address from alumnus Tuanna Teio, and reflections from CEO Gerard Neesham on the Foundationโ€™s journey, the power of mentorship, and the achievements of the students.

Mitsui E&P Australia (MEPAU) was excited to attend the Women in Energy International Womenโ€™s Day event this year. The conversation focused on balance as fairness, not favouring one gender over another but removing the visible and invisible barriers that limit everyoneโ€™s potential.

Highlights included Dr. Linda Friedland on mental health and performance, who emphasised that even top leaders often carry hidden stress from balancing work and life. She shared the powerful RESET framework: Recovery, Energy Protection, Strength, Support, Transformation. The event also featured a diverse and inspiring panel, Kirsten Rose, Talar Anjer Koushian, Louisa Frome, and Pierre Yang, showcasing how collaboration and resilience drive meaningful progress.

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œWhen we give, we gain,โ€ reminds us that generosity multiplies impact. By sharing knowledge, mentoring, and opportunities, we help women thrive.

Together, letโ€™s keep empowering and championing women while fuelling progress in energy and beyond.
