The latest podcast from Jocelyn Seamer Education is a great listen. Within the framework of cognitive load theory Jocelyn challenges the notion that a blanket whole class phonics lesson is indeed the best approach. For those of us working with struggling readers, who may be years behind their peers, this message certainly rings true, but it is equally true for children who are ahead of the pack. Exposure and active engagement are not the same thing! I'll leave it to Jocelyn to share her ideas for a more equitable approach.
