🔷 Anion Resin Preparation Guide
✅ 1. Resin Inspection
Color: light yellow / cream (uniform)
No bad smell (fouling indication)
No broken beads or excessive fines
Bed should be level (no channeling)
✅ 2. Backwashing
Use clean water (preferably filtered)
Expand resin bed by 50–70%
Time: 15–30 minutes
Purpose:
Remove dirt, suspended solids
Eliminate resin fines
Fix channeling
✅ 3. Regeneration (Main Step)
Convert resin into OH⁻ form (active form)
🔹 Chemicals Used:
Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic)
Sometimes brine (NaCl) for specific fouling conditions
🔹 Process:
NaOH concentration: 4–6% (typical)
Inject slowly to avoid channeling
Contact time: 30–60 minutes
Ensure full contact with entire resin bed
✅ 4. Slow Rinse
Flow rate: Same as regeneration
Time: 30–45 minutes
Purpose:
Push caustic through resin
Complete ion exchange reaction
✅ 5. Fast Rinse
High flow rate
Continue until:
Outlet pH becomes 7–8
Conductivity is low and stable
✅ 6. Performance Testing
After preparation, check:
Silica leakage (very important for anion)
Conductivity
pH
Flow rate
✅ 7. Initial Run to Drain
First 10–20 minutes water → drain
Removes:
Residual NaOH
Contaminants
⚠️ Common Problems
Channeling → uneven regeneration
Incomplete rinsing → high pH water
Organic fouling → color change, poor performance
Silica leakage → improper regeneration
🔧 Pro Tips (Industrial Level)
Organic fouling → clean with NaOH + brine
Silica fouling → use warm caustic cleaning
Maintain correct service flow rate
Avoid CO₂ loading from air exposure
📌 Key Difference from Cation Resin
Cation → uses acid → produces H⁺
Anion → uses caustic → produces OH⁻
Together → form pure water (H₂O)

To ensure your cation exchange resin is properly prepared and ready to produce high-quality water (especially for RO, DM, or softening systems), you need to follow a structured process.
✅ 1. Visual & Physical Inspection
Check resin color (should be uniform, typically amber/light brown).
No foul smell (indicates organic fouling or bacterial growth).
No excessive fines or broken beads.
Bed level should be even.
✅ 2. Backwashing (Very Important)
Expand resin bed by 50–70% using clean water.
Removes:
Suspended solids
Resin fines
Channeling issues
Typical time: 15–30 minutes or until water is clear.
✅ 3. Regeneration (Core Step)
Use acid to convert resin into H⁺ form (active form).
🔹 Common Chemicals:
Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)
Sulfuric Acid (H₂SO₄)
🔹 Process:
Inject acid slowly (avoid channeling)
Dosage:
HCl: 4–8% concentration
H₂SO₄: 1–2% (stepwise recommended)
Contact time: 30–60 minutes
✅ 4. Slow Rinse
Flow rate: Low (same as regeneration flow)
Purpose:
Push acid through entire resin bed
Ensure full ion exchange reaction
Time: 30–45 minutes
✅ 5. Fast Rinse
High flow rate
Continue until:
Effluent pH becomes stable (usually ~5–6 for SAC)
Conductivity drops to acceptable level
✅ 6. Performance Testing
After preparation, confirm resin is working:
🔹 Check:
Hardness leakage (should be near zero)
pH of outlet water
Conductivity
Flow rate consistency
✅ 7. Initial Run to Drain
First 10–20 minutes of produced water → send to drain
Removes:
Residual acid
Impurities
⚠️ Common Problems to Avoid
Channeling → uneven regeneration
Over/under acid dosing
Incomplete rinsing → low pH water
Fouling (iron, organics, oil)
🔧 Pro Tips (From Plant Experience)
If iron fouling suspected → use acid + reducing agent cleaning
If organic fouling → caustic cleaning (NaOH + brine)
Maintain proper service flow rate (avoid resin damage)
