Growing up in Bangladesh, I was constantly warned: "Donโt be naive. People will cheat you if youโre too forgiving or give too much."
I listened, but I disagreed. To me, the problem isn't "being nice" itโs a lack of a clear action plan. Here is how I stay "nice" without getting played:
1. Negotiate with Patience - When things get difficult, I don't get aggressive. I lay down the possibilities and aim for the 50/50 rule. If they want 40/60, they have to prove we are long-term allies. If there's no partnership, there's no deal.
2. Forgiveness with a Filter - If a vendor delivers a bad batch of bricks, I don't just "let it go." I run engineering tests. I give them one last chance to fix it. If they fail again, I don't lose, I just gain experience in better supply management.
3. "Giving More" is Marketing - If I over-deliver to a client, I donโt see it as a loss. I see it as brand trust. Iโd rather cut from my marketing budget to give a client something extra. A loyal client is worth more than any billboard.
The "Crazy" Moment: Recently, our team found ways to reduce costs. Instead of pocketing the profit, I proposed a high-end pesticide treatment for the entire building structure to protect the future wood interiors.
My partners looked at me like I was crazy. "Thatโs an unnecessary cost," they said.
My response? Iโm doing it for the brand. Iโm doing it because I want a client who knows they have a trustworthy partner.
Let them think Iโm crazy. Iโm out here proving that in the long run, the "nice guy" actually wins.

Building The Indie Room was full of firsts for me.
The first real risk.
The first time choosing entrepreneurship.
The first time starting a business I had no blueprint for.
I had never even worked from a co-working space myself.
I was certain I might fail.
I said no to spending 5 lakh taka on marketing.
And I ignored a lot of advice from people who didnโt really understand the business either.
But it was also the first time my team and I served a client.
LifeSpring trusted us on day one and hosted an internal team training lunch at The Indie Room.
That single decision gave us our first proof of concept.
Iโll always be grateful for that trust.
Alhamdulillah.
