Five years later Charles came back to Chief Walter's office and asked for another payment.
What do you mean by you have spent the N10Million Naira I paid you 5years ago? Chief Walter asked Charles.
You heard me right. Expenses was too much. Charles said. You would have invested. Chief Walter said.
I already did. Charles replied. How? Chief Walter asked. I already invested with you. Charles said.
Will you stop that Charles. Our deal was already done, there's nothing, absolutely nothing like an investment or anything you want with me. Chief Walter said.
I went to see our daughter today. She's looking beautiful. Charles said. Don't ever go close to her. Chief Walter warned Charles. Or what? She's my daughter remember. Charles said.
I paid you. I paid you, we had an agreement Charles. You agreed to this. Chief Walter said.
Yes I agreed. That's why I'm asking for another payment. Charles said.
Would you come back if I pay you again? Chief Walter asked.
I mean it depends, but come to look at it this way. This is an investment for me. Don't you think so? Charles asked Chief Walter.
Are you trying to blackmail me? Chief Walter asked Charles. This isn't black mail. It isn't. I promise you. This is just simple business. Charles said.
I never know you are like this, what have you become Charles? Chief Walter asked Charles. I become who I'm expected to become. I have become me. Me!!!. I did you a huge favor; Chief. And another N100Million is nothing compared to the money that you have. Charles said.
Did you just say N100million? Chief Walter asked Charles. Yes Chief. You heard me right. You are worth more than that. You are worth billions, so a couple of hundred million should mean nothing to you. Charles said.
Chief Walter was speechless as he stared at Charles.
You have a week to send the money to me. Same account. Charles said as he touched the Chief's
Shoulder and left his office.
Chief Walter could not believe what just happened in his office. It was a nightmare.
He went home after work and his wife was at home with their daughter.
Good evening Love. Evelyn said to her husband. Evelyn Babe. Chief Walter replied.
How is work today? Evelyn asked the husband as they went upstairs. He came back pretty late and Rose was already asleep.
He wanted to tell the wife about Charles but he remembered that his wife warned him that something like this would happened. She never trusted Charles.
How would he face her now and tell her that Charles came back and is demanding for more money.
Chief Walter just silently went to the bedroom.
Rose said a man came to meet her at school today. Evelyn broke the silence.
What man? Chief Walter asked pretending not to know. I don't know. But she said the man said he is your friend. Evelyn said. What friend of mine? Chief Walter asked Evelyn.
I don't know but I'm going to ask the school authorities on Monday. Evelyn said.
I will handle that. Chief Walter said. I will handle it. Evelyn said. Let it go Evelyn. I will take the baby to school on Monday and get this sorted out. Chief Walter said.
Evelyn became scared and worried, She perceive that her husband knows something.
The slept off that night. The next morning they woke up to a continuous knock on their door.
Evelyn went downstairs and opened the door and saw Chief Walter's mother with a new girl.
Good morning Mama you didn't call that you are coming. Evelyn said.
Where is my husband? He is the reason that I am here. The mother said.
I will go call him. Evelyn said and went upstairs and called Chief Walter.
Mother what are you doing here and who is this lady? Chief Walter asked immediately he came downstairs.
This is Mazi Ibeh's daughter. You remember Mazi Ibeh and his wife Ngozi my very good friend from childhood. His mother said.
I remember them what is their daughter doing here? Chief Walter asked. Her name is Nneka and she is your new wife. I brought her to give you a male child. Chief Walter's mother said.

Chief Walter stood downstairs as his mother took his new wife Nneka upstairs.
He went upstairs to the masters bedroom to meet his first wife Evelyn.
Their five years old daughter was finally awake. Daddy good morning. Rose said to the father. Morning my darling. Chief Walter said as he hugged his daughter.
Can you go downstairs and meet grandma. Chief Walter said to the daughter. He noticed the worried face of his first wife.
Rose went out of the bedroom leaving her parents alone.
I'm sorry. Chief Walter said. What are you sorry about? You shouldn't be sorry so far as you won't allow your mother bring another woman into our home. Evelyn said.
You shouldn't worry about Nneka and my mother. I will take care of them. Chief Walter said. You better do, I'm not ready to share you with another woman not after what we have been through. Evelyn said.
You shouldn't worry my love. Before tomorrow they will move out. Chief Walter said.
Let me keep it in mind for you. Evelyn said and went out to stay with her baby.
Mama was already playing with Rose when Evelyn came to the living room. Come and have your breakfast baby. Evelyn said to to her daughter.
She's already having breakfast. Are you not my grand child? Mama said to Evelyn. Mama brought okpa for me. Rose said to her mother smiling.
Rose knew exactly what mama was planning to do. She didn't want to call a scene. So she allowed the daughter enjoy her time with Mama.
She still went upstairs to meet her husband. Your mother should leave this evening with that woman she brought to take my place. I don't have the energy to f!ght. I don't like what mama is doing, she is trying to turn my own daughter against me. Evelyn said.
Chief Walter was just confused. He has not settled the problem with Charles, Charles is demanding for N100Million to keep his secret and now his mother has come with her own trouble.
He couldn't stay at home that day, he decided to excuse himself and go for a drink. He wanted to clear his head. How do he tell his mother that he is impotent? No!!! He will feel less of a man. He can't. He won't do that.
After having a drink he came back home and met his mother in the living room.
Walter come upstairs let me show you something in my room. I don't know what is happening to the bathroom, water is rarely coming out of the tap. Walter have you been drinking? The mother asked.
Show me what's wrong with your bathroom mother. Chief Walter said and f0ll0wed his mother to her room.
Immediately he entered inside and went to the bathroom, his mother sneak out and Nneka sneaked into the bedroom.
The mother locked the bedroom door from outside and Nneka was alone with Chief Walter.
She was just tying towel and sedúctively walked towards Chief Walter.

Chief Walter's mother brought a new wife for Chief Walter since his first wife couldn't give birth to a male child.
Her name is Nneka. She is a very good girl. From a good home and also a virgin. She is complete tear robber. So all you have to do is do the do and a male child will come.
We can't keep waiting for your first wife. You know you are getting old and if tomorrow something happens to you, your father's brothers will want to take all your properties. I'm doing this for your own good Walter. Chief Walter's mother said.
Mama I have never complained to you before because a child. What you are doing now is not right. How do you want my wife to feel now? Walter asked the mother.
How she feels is of no importance now. The important thing is for you to have a male child. A male child is all I ask for and since she can't give you even after forcing her way into your life. I have brought someone that will give you a male child. The mother said.
Mama this is not right. It's not proper. I love my wife, please take this lady out of my house. Chief Walter said to his mother.
His mother immediately started crying. So you don't love me. You love your wife and you don't love me? I carried you in my womb for nine months, you súck my breast and now you are choosing side?. Walter. The mother said.
Mama. It's not like that, it's not what I mean and you know that. Chief Walter said.
Walter's first wife Evelyn left them and went upstair. She was very heart broken. She already knew how this was going to end.
Babe, where are you going to? Chief Walter asked the wife. But she didn't respond instead she went upstairs.
Mama you see what you have caused now. Chief Walter said to the mother.
What have I caused? So it's now a bad thing for a mother to care for his only son? Walter. The mother said.
This isn't caring mother. Chief Walter said. What did this woman give to you? First you stubbornly got married to her even after I told you No. You went ahead and got married to her without my permission. I let that be. I decided to be the bigger person and welcome her. Walter it's been over 10years already. 10years and still no male child. The mother said.
Mother. Please take this lady and leave my house. Chief Walter said.
You are chasing me out of your house? Walter? Me your mother? You don't care about me anymore. Do you know the kind of convincing I had to convince Nneka's mother before she allowed me bring Nneka here? Nneka is a virgin. She might even give birth to twins after the first trial. The mother said.
There's no trial here mama. Chief Walter said. No problem. No body is leaving. I'm not leaving, she is not leaving until you have agreed to give her a chance.
I have been quiet for too long. Today you will tell me if I gave birth to you or the other way round. The mother said.
Nneka come let me show you to your room. The mother said as she took Nneka to the guest bedroom.
Chief Walter just stood downstairs speechless. He didn't know what to do at that point.

💫 THE GIRL WHO SMILED AT MIDNIGHT 💫

I had just moved into the old family house my late uncle left behind.
Everyone in the village called it Ile Eerie — The Strange House.
But I didn’t believe in superstitions…
until the night everything changed.
Episode 1 — The Midnight Smile
The first evening was peaceful.
The house was dusty, smelling like wood, forgotten memories, and hidden secrets.
I swept everywhere, arranged my things, and boiled water for a bath.
By 11:45pm, sleep refused to come.
The silence inside that house was too loud.
So I stepped outside to sit under the guava tree, scrolling through my phone.
Then I felt it —
a sudden cold breeze that didn’t match the warm night.
I raised my head.
Standing at the corner of the compound…
was a girl.
A small girl.
Maybe 10 or 11 years old.
Wearing a white dress.
Barefoot.
Dirty.
And smiling.
Not an ordinary smile…
the kind that stretches too wide to be normal.
I froze.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“Good evening, sir,” she said softly.
Her voice was smooth… too smooth… like she practiced it.
“Good… evening,” I managed to say.
She tilted her head.
Her smile broadened unnaturally.
“Uncle Sola said you would come home today. He is happy you came.”
My blood ran cold.
My uncle died four years ago.
I swallowed.
“Who are you?”
She blinked slowly.
Still smiling.
“I stay here.”
She pointed to the backyard…
where my uncle’s old storage shed used to be.
The shed he never allowed anyone to open.
The one villagers said “something” lived inside.
Before I could respond, she added:
“You should not sleep in that room. He doesn’t like visitors in there.”
My throat tightened.
“Which room?”
She lifted her small hand…
and pointed directly at the room I had arranged as my bedroom.
Then she whispered:
“Midnight is coming. He will soon wake up.”
My phone slipped from my hand.
I looked up to ask her what she meant—
SHE WAS GONE.
Not walking away…
not fading…
Just gone.
The breeze stopped.
The night returned to normal.
But inside me, nothing was normal again.
I rushed back into the house and locked the door twice.
From midnight till 3am,
I didn’t sleep.
Because someone—
or something—
kept knocking on my bedroom door…
one slow knock at a time:
Kpok… kpok… kpok…
And every knock came with a whisper:
“Leave the room…”
