Alan Fletcher was born in Kenya and studied at the Central School of Arts & Crafts, continuing at the Royal College of Art and Design of Yale University. He was a designer for Fortune, in New York, in 1958 and joined Forbes and Gill in 1962 (the Fletcher/Forbes/Gill studio became Crosby/Fletcher/Forbes between 1965 and 1972). He was also a founding partner of Pentagram in 1972. The British Modernism section captures the movement he helped shape, while the United Kingdom archive reflects the broader design culture he worked within for much of his career.
