08/10/2023

Meet Jared, Basketball Coach at Medicine Hat High School , Trainer & Motivator at Badlands Training Centre, Husband, Father, Cat/Dog Dad, Equestrian, Gamer, MMA enthusiast and Car Lover.

Q: How long have you been in Medicine Hat? What brought you here?

A: My family and I moved to Medicine Hat in 2019. It was for work actually! My wife is a nurse with her management degree, and had taken a management position with a retirement home here in town. I of course tagged along, and garnered a position with the same company in the recreation department.

Q: How/when did you become so passionate about fitness/health/wellness? How do you feel being in that industry has help you?

A: I think the passion for fitness was a by-product of my passion for sports in my youth. The two linked in the obvious fashion: The higher the level of fitness, the better you'd perform. It was a perfect, symbiotic relationship.

Q: You coach basketball? How did you get involved in that?

A: I've had a lifelong love affair with basketball, playing through high school, and then in college. I stayed active in the sport for many years as a fan, and playing socially. When I moved here to the Gas City, I had an opportunity to help coach at Eagle Butte HS in Dunmore, and I jumped at the opportunity. I had a great time there, and shared the gym with great kids, and great Coaches.
Following the first Covid shut down of school sports, I was able to transition to the 4A program at Hat High and join an amazing coaching staff.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being involved in youth sports?

A: My favorite part of coaching youth sports is witnessing genuine growth in these kids on a day to day basis. Sometimes small, sometimes big... but growth is growth! Preparing these athletes for the real world is important: effort, investment, dedication and accountability.

Q: Accountability! When we met, you talked about the importance of accountability, Which I completely agree with! Why do you think accountability is so important? And how is it important in the things you're involved in?

A: Accountability is what I "hang my hat on" as a Coach. It is sorely missed in today's society. In a culture of "participation trophies" I firmly believe that accolades and rewards should go to those that EARN them. Anything less is setting them up for failure in the real world... you don't get the raise at work, just because you show up everyday like everyone else. You get the raise by working hard, and PERFORMING.

Q: What is your favorite thing about living in Medicine Hat & being
involved in the community?

A: It may sound cliché, but it's the people! In my short time here in Medicine Hat, I have been warmly welcomed and included.

Q: What is something you'd like to see more of in Medicine Hat?

A: More food! It's not that we don't have an already vibrant, and colorful culture, i's just that when it comes to food, more is always better!

Q: What is something you would recommend people do in the Medicine Hat area if they are new here?

A: Explore the Cypress Hills! Having such a beautiful natural area so close is something long time residents and newcomers alike should take advantage of!

Q: What's your favorite thing to do in Medicine Hat?

A: Drive my car. I obsess over my 1994 Pontiac Firebird Formula!

Q: What are some positive words of affirmation for your fellow citizens of Medicine Hat?

A: Stand tall, head high, chest out and smile like you know what is going on 🙂

Location: Basketball Court at Badlands Training Centre.
