Another weekday shift in beautiful downtown Calgary. TL Graham, and Operations Admin Kyla, joined our Volunteer Claire this evening to stroll around East Village and visit some of the areas we served regularly before our move. Be The Change depends on in-kind donations to supply our outreach shifts with snacks, hygiene items and clothing. We have a current summer supply wishlist on Amazon, that anyone can shop, and supplies will be delivered to our headquarters! The items on this list are some of the most needed and requested. Tuesday night; humid and cloudy in downtown Calgary, two of our most loyal volunteers Athena and Carl head out with Team Lead Garth, to hand out snacks and sandwiches to our friends on the street. Dehydration is a major concern for the unhoused in the summertime. Along with bottled water and electrolytes, BTC hands out resource lists with info on accessible water fountains and washrooms every shift. These resources can be a map to meet lifesaving basic needs for the folks we serve. This week the BeTheChange leadership was able to meet up for some pizza, some conversation, some planning and some mutual support. Our Leadership Team includes helping professionals from a wide variety of vocations including Paramedicine, Social Work, Peer Support and Lived Experience backgrounds. The conversation is always lively as we catch up, swap stories and share the scuttlebutt from our street shifts. Employing Team Leads with a varied background helps us to keep perspectives fresh and balanced as we collaborate and problem-solve the challenges we face as a non profit, serving the unhoused public four nights a week.
