Kananaskis Improvement District and Kananaskis Country have issued a State of Local Emergency due to ongoing rainfall and localized flooding affecting road access and several recreation areas.
Some road access remains limited in parts of Kananaskis Country. We are actively working to establish road access for those currently unable to leave the area. Visitors in the area are asked to remain where they are if it is safe to do so. William Watson Lodge and Peter Lougheed Discovery Centre are available as a temporary shelter for those who require a safe, dry place to stay.
Visitors are encouraged to postpone non-essential travel until conditions improve. Impacted reservations will be automatically cancelled and refunded.
Emergency teams continue to coordinate response efforts and are monitoring infrastructure, supporting campground operations, and maintaining road closures where needed.

🌧️June 29 update: Local river levels are rising, but overbank river flooding is not expected in Calgary communities.
While a provincial flood warning is in effect for the Elbow River upstream of Calgary, communities along the Elbow River are now protected by the Springbank Off-Stream Reservoir (SR1), including Discovery Ridge. SR1 was activated for the first time today to manage the high runoff from the Upper Elbow watershed.
Ghost Reservoir is capturing flow on the Bow, however, there is a significant inflow from the catchment downstream of the reservoir. As such, along the Bow River there is a potential risk of basement seepage in some low-lying areas.
The Calgary Fire Department is advising Calgarians to stay off our rivers due to unsafe conditions caused by rising water levels.
🌊 River levels remain elevated and are expected to stay high through mid-week and into Canada Day.
⚠️ Expect fast-moving water, floating debris and localized bank erosion.
🚣 River Advisories are in effect, and some pathways near rivers are closed, with additional closures possible.

Hydro work goes far beyond maintaining infrastructure. It involves live systems, constant judgment calls, and, in many cases, no instruction manual. Many of our Bow Valley hydro sites have been operating for more than a century, yet they continue to safely power communities today. This work requires integrating historic mechanical systems with modern technology, all while operating in the Rockies where teams must plan for changing conditions, weather and even wildlife.
Throughout a demanding year, the team maintained a perfect safety record by leading with collaboration, open communication and a strong culture of psychological safety. People looked out for one another, spoke up when it mattered and worked closely with leaders who listened. Their achievement is a powerful reminder that safety excellence isn’t just about processes—it is built on trust, accountability and teamwork.
On April 28, Canada observes the National Day of Mourning, a time to remember those who have been injured, fallen ill or lost their lives in the workplace. Similar days of remembrance are observed in many parts of the world, including the United States and Australia, aligning with a shared responsibility across our global operations to ensure every worker gets home safely.
