Published in the Canadian Veterinary Journal in March 2026, Dr. Søren Boysen, Dr. Serge Chalhoub, and colleagues demonstrated that three handheld ultrasound devices (Butterfly IQ+, Clarius C7HD3VET, and VScan Air) answered key questions for abdominal, pleural space and lung, and cardiac POCUS), although image quality varied between the devices for certain views and anatomical structures.

Wonderful feedback from a POCUS lab participant!
POCUS is most valuable when there is a moderate to high pre-test probability that a certain pathology is present, which emphasizes the importance of patient evaluation and clinical reasoning to determine which binary questions to answer. For example, a cat presents with dyspnea. If we ask, “Why is this cat dyspneic?”, there are many differential diagnoses. But if we ask a binary question such as, “In this dyspneic cat, is pleural effusion present - yes or no?”, we can quickly and confidently rule in or rule out certain pathology. Avoid the temptation to randomly place the probe on a patient and “just have a look” without specific questions to answer. Human studies show that the likelihood of false negative and false positive results are markedly decreased when POCUS is guided by binary questions!

Published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science in January 2026, Dr. Søren Boysen and colleagues describe two dyspneic cats with prominent asynchronous abdominal curtain signs in the absence of pneumothorax. Both cats had severe pulmonary hyperinflation secondary to expiratory flow limitation (feline lower airway disease and suspected anaphylaxis). Medical management resulted in complete resolution of respiratory signs and normalization of the abdominal curtain sign. Clinicians should consider pulmonary hyperinflation in cats presenting with asynchronous abdominal curtain sign to avoid misdiagnosis of pneumothorax.
