Solar is booming in Alberta, but what happens when the sun goes down or the grid drops?

For residential installs, battery storage is becoming the new standard. Customers are moving past just net metering and asking for true energy independence. When you’re designing a system, you’ve got two main choices for storage: AC-coupled and DC-coupled batteries.

AC-coupled systems are great for retrofitting existing solar setups because they have their own inverter. DC-coupled systems are usually more efficient for new installs since there’s only one power conversion step.

Make sure you’re sizing the battery bank not just for daily use, but considering those long, dark Alberta winter nights.

Here’s the weekend trade tip: Keep your wire in the truck with the heat on until the exact moment you need it. With more Alberta homeowners making the switch to EVs, Level 2 charger installs are becoming a weekly staple for residential crews. But are you setting your customers up for long-term success?

When sizing a residential EV charger circuit, don’t just look at their current vehicle. A 40-amp breaker might handle their current commuter car, but when they upgrade to an electric truck in three years, they’ll be calling you back complaining about slow charge times.

Always run wire rated for at least a 60-amp circuit (like 6/2 NMD90) if the panel can handle the load calculation. Even if you’re only installing a 40-amp or 50-amp breaker today, future-proofing the wire run saves the homeowner from a costly rewire later and builds massive trust in your expertise.

Remember to factor the continuous load into your residential service calculation according to the CEC.

Take 30 minutes this weekend to audit your setup. Group your materials by task (rough-in bins, finishing bins, troubleshooting kits). Keep your daily drivers in a dedicated veto bag or packout that never gets buried.

Alright, let’s talk kitchens. We’ve all been there, trying to figure out exactly where to drop those boxes so the inspector doesn’t flag us.

Under CEC Rule 26-700, the spacing for receptacles along kitchen counters is strict. You need a receptacle for every 900 mm of usable wall space, and no point along the wall line can be more than 450 mm from a receptacle.

Don’t forget about the islands and peninsulas, either—they have their own specific rules depending on the layout.

Keep your tape measure handy and plan it out before pulling wire.
