Our first slithery friend of the year! A northern red belly ❤️ These guys are very secretive and shy but we have TONS on the farm! They are known as a gardener’s best friend because they eat lots of bugs and slugs! Luckily that’s exactly where we found this fella. In the garden living his best life. Happy snacking buddy!

Wow! It’s a mushroom kind of week!
When you’re kind to Mother Nature, she has a way of returning the favour. Sometimes that comes in the form of a bounty of delicious mushrooms growing right on your front lawn.
This week, fairy ring mushrooms decided to make our lawn their home, and we’re not complaining. Fresh, foraged, and right outside the front door.
Yum yum!

An appreciation post for how incredible Mother Nature is.
Four years ago, we had a tree stump on the back lawn ground down and covered over. The grass established itself beautifully, and it seemed like all traces of the tree had disappeared.
Fast forward to today, and nature has reminded us that nothing truly goes to waste. These mushrooms have suddenly emerged right where that old stump once stood, feeding on the decaying wood still hidden beneath the surface.
While they may look appealing, these mushrooms are not a good addition to the dinner table unless you enjoy feeling very unwell within 30 minutes to 2 hours of eating them. They are, however, famous for another reason. As they decompose, they produce a distinctive black “ink.” Historically, this ink was used for dyeing textiles such as wool and fabric, as well as for drawing and calligraphy.
A fascinating reminder that even years later, nature is still hard at work beneath our feet.
