Hey ya'll! Long time no post as I have taken some time to focus on some other things. Noteably for me, I'm going back to school in the fall and have found summer work!
I've found the itch again to get back to writing and posting here, so I thought I'd start by a little project I've been thinking about. So, lets begin!
I once heard someone say spec work is like "fan-art" for brands, and since hearing that I've been thinking about different brands that I'd love to write for and thought "Why not make spec work for them?" So I'm starting a project where for some of my favourite brands (local and abroad) I'll be creating spec copy for to add onto my portfolio!
You may be wondering "What brands have you chosen and why?!" So, allow me to explain if you're not familiar with some of these brands.
I chose Spencers, Spirit Halloween and Word Tonic because they all share a common "ridicoulousness" in their TOV and online prescence.
I chose Shiddys, Sea Change and Blume because they are all products that I enjoy. Plus they're Canadian!
I chose Breast Cancer Canada as I have a personal connection to the cause. Long before I was born my grandmother had battled breast cancer.
And lastly the theatre masks! I have been doing theatre (in various capacities) for over 10 years. If I ever were to dedicate my writing to a niche I would probably write for theatres/performance spaces and companies of the like. For this project I've chosen to highlight Mixtape YEG as I have been involved with them now for over a year!
I'll be sharing my works here as I complete them. I've already started to brainstorm some ideas for the mini campaigns and am excited to delve into creating pieces for them!

COPY SPEC WORK/FOR FUNSIES NOT OFFICIAL AT ALL
Absolutely in love with Chappell Roan's marketing for "The Giver" and thought "man I wanna get in on that too", so I made some spec work mockups for it! Absolutely love 's work and want to give credit to them for their work, love seeing it on my feed! 🩷🩷🩷🩷 Big fan here 🤩

Lava Lamp Spec exercise from Word Tonic. The challenge was like the "A hundo a day" challenge, where the idea is to write a bunch of headlines and you'll get to a gem of an idea after 99 "bad" ones. I think I did about 30 total, and these were the best ones.
For the design I was inspired by ads you'd see in an older Reader's Digest magazine. Simple, warm color scheme.

Made some Valentine's Day Cards for a local improv group . Their primary audience is improvisers and improv enthusiasts, which love a good pun. I love the yearly Valentine's trend that everyone hops on as it's fun to see how clever people are with personalizing it!

Word Tonic Spec Work
Prompt was to create an ad that promotes Word Tonic to people that don't know they exist. Ridiculous, fun, gen-z, meme heavy TOV. Had fun designing this post too as their branding is NUTS in the best way.

Social media copy spec work for Scrub Daddy. Their TOV and in general social media presence is soo ridiculous and fun. Really happy with the design element of this one and think I'll carry this motif through for future social media copy mockups as it looks oh-so clean.
