Chiasmus in the Bible. Chiasmus is a poetic device that uses an ABC-CBA structure. Not only do the first three verses of Isaiah 60 contain chiasmus, but theologians have suggested that the entire chapter may be chiastic. Knowing more about the poetry of the passage helps explain why these verses are so memorable. There's a good reason why they're included in Handel's Messiah!. When I was in high school, many years ago, we learned just a few of these and back then it was always "man" versus everything else.

I've always been conflicted about simplifying literature so that it's just about a single conflict, which is why the lesson this is part of will be more nuanced.
