GFORCe
Georgetown Friends of Refugees Committee (GFORCe) - Ontario, Canada.
Our second Afghan family has arrived and it has been a long journey for them:
August 2021: Taliban took control of Afghanistan and the family was forced into hiding. Father had been a journalist and daughter an educator of women.
October 2021: Government of Canada offered a special program to help Afghanis threatened because of their work as teachers, journalists, translators etc.
January 2022: GFORCe3 heard of their situation and agreed to
sponsor them.
February 2022: We financially helped them escape to Pakistan where they again went into hiding (The Taliban have a long reach).
March 2022: We submitted the application for sponsorship but the allotment of spaced for 2022 was used up.
We tried again for 2023 but with no luck.
Finally in 2024 the application was approved and they arrived in
October.

Having supported this family in Pakistan and Turkey for 18 months, we need some more funds to fulfill our commitment and help them establish their new life here in Canada.
A tax receipt for your donation is available either through Knox Presbyterian Church or Norval United Church. Make your cheque out to the church and indicate refugee on the cheque.

GFORCe began in 2015 and to date has helped two Syrian families and one Afghan family make new lives in Canada.
The Syrian families arrived in 2016 and 2019 and became Canadian citizens in 2022 and 2023.
The first Afghan family arrived in Canada on 12 October of 2023 and is now independent. Our second family arrived in October 2024 and we are working hard to help them get established.
