A little advice from us about our industry....
This year especially, we've received more and more calls from homeowners asking us to repair or complete work left behind by another contractor.
These conversations are becoming all too common.
We've heard about contractors arriving with homeowner grade equipment, or worse, asking to borrow the client's tools. Others show up with too little equipment or too few workers to realistically complete the job. Some ask for payment after the first day, only to disappear halfway through the project, saying it's more work than expected or asking for more money before disappearing. Calls, texts, and emails go unanswered, leaving homeowners with unfinished projects and the expense of paying someone else to fix them.
We've also seen window cleaners arrive with nothing more than a bottle of Windex and a rag. Junk removal companies that take a customer's belongings only to illegally dump them in fields or on rural roads, leaving the homeowner wondering how their items ended up there and paying again to have it properly removed. Lawn care companies that scalp a lawn so severely that the grass is left brown and struggling for weeks. Unfortunately, the list goes on.
This isn't about criticizing anyone. Every business has to start somewhere. We certainly did. But there is a difference between starting small and taking on work you're not properly equipped, trained, or insured to complete.
At JOAT Property Services, we've spent nearly 10 years investing in commercial grade equipment, proper techniques, and safe work practices. We're proud that in almost 10 years of serving our community, we haven't had an insurance claim. We believe preparation, experience, and doing the job right the first time matter.
One story that stuck with us was a homeowner who hired someone to mow an acre plus property. The contractor arrived in their personal SUV with a single push mower folded down in the back. Another homeowner paid hundreds of dollars for a large mulch installation, only to have the contractor arrive with four bags of mulch from Costco. Unfortunately, these situations are happening more often than people realize.
Our advice is simple.
✔ Ask for proof of insurance.
✔ Ask for references.
✔ Ask to see before and after photos of similar projects.
✔ Ask what equipment they'll be using.
✔ Ask how they dispose of waste and debris.
✔ Choose the company you trust, not just the lowest price.
The cheapest quote isn't always the least expensive in the end.
Whether you choose JOAT Property Services or another contractor, we genuinely want you to have a great experience and receive quality workmanship.
If you're ever unsure about a quote or simply want a second opinion before hiring someone, give us a call or send us a text. We'd much rather help you avoid a costly mistake than have to help fix one later
