Design and aesthetics are cyclical. It is continually revisiting, borrowing and reimagining.
That brings us to 2022 design trend 01. The 1990's revival.
The '90s have returned. Nostalgia is a soft spot for people, whether it's the 80's in shows like , or the '90s in design.
The reemergence of the '90s in design is bringing back cultural artifacts from the time. We're seeing rough and gruff textures from grunge culture. Bright colours, Memphis patterns and simple emojis reflect the MTV pop mainstream of the time. And dark + neon spaces that ode to rave culture, 90's VR and retrofuturism.

Today marks the 12th annual day. This day is especially important as we enter our third year of a global pandemic that has taken a major toll on our collective mental health. 🧠
For every text message and social media interaction made with the hashtag , Bell Media has pledged to donate 5 cents to mental health initiatives in Canada. Last year, more than 159.17 million messages and interactions were made, with Bell donating roughly $7.96 million towards these initiatives. It is impossible to dispute the reach of the Bell Let’s Talk campaign. However, in these conversations, it is also important to be critical.
about the hyper-stigmatized conditions such as schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder that are largely left out of the conversation altogether.
about inequality and intersectionality and the ways in which mental health and other socioeconomic factors work together.
about the ways in which companies profit off of this campaign, pedalling wellness products under the guise of social justice.
This is not to discredit the important work that Bell Media has done — it is only to say that the work is far from over, there is always room for improvement, and that constructive conversations cannot come with critique.
