Ranking ways to make more money 📊

🔹 New clients — C tier. Hardest one.
🔹 More hours — B tier. Costs you personally.
🔹 Cutting costs — F tier. Cut the wrong thing and it hurts the business.
🔹 Upselling existing clients — A tier. Easier since trust’s already there.
🔹 Raising prices — S tier. One decision and nothing else changes.

💡 Business doing $300K a year at 20% margin makes $60K profit.
Raise prices 10%, profit jumps to $90K.
No new clients, no extra hours.

Was looking at this gas receipt and it got me thinking about something.

A lot of business owners get excited when they see huge numbers coming into their bank account. But that number doesn’t tell the whole story. What matters is what’s left after everything’s paid; that’s your margin.

I’ve seen it; two businesses, same revenue, wildly different margins. One’s actually healthy. The other just looks busy.

Businesses run on the bottom line, and that bottom line is built by margin.

In Canada, we don’t get good discount offers. If you’ve felt that too, this one’s for you.

Most people don’t realize — a discount doesn’t come out of revenue, it comes straight out of profit. A business running on a 20% margin that gives a 10% discount isn’t losing 10% of their profit. They’re losing 50% of it.

Once you see the math, it makes a lot more sense from both sides.

Share this with a friend — it might change how they look at discounts.

If you know this number, you’re not shooting in the dark.

Owners of successful businesses know this number, and it’s what gives them full control.

That number is the break-even point — the point before which every dollar earned is just covering costs.

Once it’s known, there’s no more guessing when profit actually starts. It turns uncertainty into clarity.

Share this with a business partner who’d love having that kind of clarity.

Know a lot of businessmen who are fully slammed; booked for weeks, no time to breathe. And still feel like they’re not getting ahead.

Being busy and being profitable are not the same thing.

Usually it comes down to pricing. A lot of business owners set their price a while back, got busy, and never went back to check if it still made sense.

And if prices are being kept low just to stay competitive; worth knowing this: underpricing kills more businesses than charging what you’re actually worth ever does.

Being busy feels like success. But the number in your bank account tells the truth.

Share this with a friend who’s always busy but doesn’t seem to get ahead. Might be exactly what they need to hear.

Rent doesn’t care what season it is.

Summer’s busy for most businesses, money’s moving. Winter hits, things slow down, but the bills don’t slow down with it. Fixed costs show up every single month, no matter how many clients walked through the door.

Once that number is known ahead of time, the slow season stops feeling like a crisis and starts feeling like something already planned for.

Send this to a business owner who could use that kind of clarity before winter hits.

One bank account for business and personal? CRA loves that. You won’t.

Most business owners mix money at the start and tell themselves they’ll fix it later. Later turns into a very expensive accountant bill. You can’t read your numbers if your numbers are buried under grocery runs and Netflix. Separate accounts. Non negotiable.

“You can’t manage money you can’t see clearly.”

Branded truck. $12K net worth.

There’s a branded electrician’s truck on almost every highway in Ontario. Clean. Wrapped. Full equipment in the back. Looks like a thriving business. But behind that truck — there’s a number most people never see.

Every asset that makes a business look successful usually has a debt attached to it. The difference between what a business owns and what it owes — that’s the net worth.

Truck — $65,000. Tools — $20,000. Total assets — $85,000. Truck loan — $58,000. Equipment financing — $15,000. Total liabilities — $73,000.

Net worth — $12,000.

The truck wrapping cost more than the business is worth on paper.

“What a business looks like on the highway and what it’s worth on paper — are rarely the same number.”

That new equipment you just financed? It’s an asset AND a liability at the same time.

Most business owners see a shiny new setup and think they’re building wealth.

But if what you owe is bigger than what it’s worth -you’re not ahead.

You’re underwater with good lighting.
An asset is anything your business owns that has value.

A liability is anything your business owes.

Same purchase. Two sides of the ledger.

“Owning something and affording something are two very different things.”

Money coming into a business does not always mean the business is doing well.

A business can have positive cash flow and still not be profitable.
Here is the most common way it happens.

A business owner takes a $50,000 loan to expand. Bank account looks great. More staff hired, bigger lease signed. But the revenue never caught up with the new costs.

Now the loan is being paid back AND money is bleeding out every month.

Cash was flowing in. Profit was never there.

Positive cash flow and profitability are two completely different things.

A full bank account does not always mean a healthy business. The real question is -where did that cash actually come from?
