Proposed Gambles Pond Development
By Jesse Ritcey
Hi folks, just wanted to say that we have been made aware that there is an application in to the City to take land behind Gambles Pond out of the Agricultural Land Reserve so that it can be developed. The way the process works is that our Council will vote on whether or not to forward on the application, after holding a public hearing on the matter. If it moves forward, the Agricultural Land Commission then has a process to either grant or deny the application.
Each step of the way there will be opportunities to submit input. At this time you can submit comments on the matter by e-mailing [email protected] and referencing Application id: 107802, PID PID: 030-880-815.
Some things that jump to my mind on this:
The pond drainage is identified as an environmentally sensitive area in the official community plan (OCP).
It is adjacent to a wildlife corridor identified in the OCP.
Maintaining ALR lands helps manage urban growth, keeping taxes down by not needing to expand servicing to new areas.
Maintaining ALR lands prevents property speculation from driving up ag land prices. This keeps farming/ranching activities economically viable in the community, which is important for food security and our economy.

Field Light Community Summer Giveaway.
Every issue of Field Light exists because of this community — the long‑time readers who’ve been with us from the start, the new faces who’ve just joined, and the folks who are catching up again after some time away. Every single one of you matters here, and I’m grateful for you.
To share a little appreciation, I’m giving away a copy of Light, Space & Time by David DuChemin — a book full of heart, honesty, and the kind of creative wisdom that makes you slow down and really see the world again. If you don’t know David’s work yet, you’ll love him after reading this. His writing feels like a conversation with someone who understands why we chase light, why we wait for moments, and why paying attention matters.
This giveaway is meant to inspire new nature lovers as well as those who’ve been walking these trails for years.
Learning about our wild neighbours and the environment we share is something that connects us — all of us. No sides, no division, no debates.
Just curiosity, care, and a deeper understanding of the place we call home.
To enter:
Like and share this post and leave a comment about a moment in nature you’ve noticed lately — something small, something fleeting, something that made you pause.
Please note: I can’t ship the book. The winner will need to pick it up here at Field Light headquarters — also known as my home in Kamloops. I’ll draw a winner on Canada Day.
Thank you — truly — for being part of this community. For reading, for sharing, for showing up, and for caring about the land and the lives around us. Field Light is stronger because you’re here.
