This is her story

Almost 8 years ago I was diagnosed as having a BRCA mutation. I was given an 87% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer and a 40% risk of developing ovarian cancer. I chose to have a prophylactic mastectomy and hysterectomy to reduce my risks. My experience dealing with the consequences of this mutation kindled my passion for health advocacy, outreach, support, prevention and education for those facing hereditary cancers. When I was diagnosed, there were few resources and no real support for people like me so I created an international support group online (now the largest in the world), and a Montreal-Based support group. I write for two cancer organizations, Connect4Cancer and Lacuna loft and I am also involved with Personal ink which provides mastectomy tattoos for breast cancer survivors and BRCA mutation carriers. I speak publically throughout North America and I am proud to work at Hope & Cope which provides support for every age and every stage of cancer.
