🐛 FRIEND OR FOE? IPM EDITION

Meet the Spittlebug!

If you've ever spotted a blob of white foam on your plants and thought, "What on earth is that?" you've likely found a spittlebug nymph.

These tiny insects hide inside a protective foam while feeding on plant sap. The bubbles help protect them from predators, dehydration, and extreme temperatures.

So, should you be worried?

🚦 Wise Roots Threat Level: 2/10 🟢

In most gardens, spittlebugs are more curious than concerning. They rarely cause significant damage and are generally considered a minor pest. The foam often looks far worse than the actual impact on the plant.

When might they become a problem?
• Large populations
• Young seedlings
• Newly planted shrubs
• Plants already under stress

🌿 Wise Roots IPM Approach:
Observe first. Act second.

If the foam bothers you, simply spray it off with a strong stream of water. Most established plants will tolerate spittlebugs without any intervention.

Remember, not every insect is a pest. Healthy gardens support healthy ecosystems, and many insects play an important role in the food web.

Have you spotted spittlebugs in your garden this spring?
