In 2010, the United Nations officially recognized March 21 as International Nowruz Day. With it’s origins tracing back to the ancient religion of Zoroastrianism, Newroz is the Kurdish celebration of the Persian New Year Festival “Nowruz”. More than 300 million people worldwide celebrate Newroz – and have celebrated it for more than 3,000 years – from the Balkans to the Black Sea Basin to Central Asia to the Middle East and elsewhere.
If you or someone you know celebrates Newroz, be sure to wish them a Newroz Pîroz Be! (which translates to “Happy New Year” in Kurdish).
