Mila, my excitable 8 month old board and train working SO HARD at her place/down stay with dog distractions- her biggest temptation! A couple things are going on here; a) she's required to hold her place/down-stay even with a dog walking past her and b) me saying "yes!" or anything really in any tone doesn't mean anything unless I say her release word which means she can break her last given command.

I hope everyone has had a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season. Due to a covid scare my first board and train of 2022 is starting a week late, but she's here now and we're excited to get started! Mila is also my first board and train in MONTHS that is not here for aggression issues and has NO bite record, go Mila! She's an 8.5 month old girl who is happy to blow off any/all known commands if there's a better opportunity for her. We'll be getting her started with ecollar work, and solidifying that she has to do what her mom says immediately, not on her own time. Welcome Mila, I'll be posting progress updates as we go!

Does your dog comfortably wear a muzzle if they have to? Neither of my dogs have a bite record, however they are both muzzle conditioned on the off chance it is ever necessary for them to wear one. They have never threatened to bite anyone. I have two muzzles readily available in their sizes so that if a vet/groomer/dog parent ever requests that they would feel more comfortable with my dogs wearing muzzles they would do it no problem. Have your dog ready for real life.

Let's talk about the PLACE command. All my board and trains (and my own two) are required to do HOURS of down stays in a PLACE command daily. This is a key exercise in terms of self control and brain stimulation. None of the dogs in my house are allowed to free roam my home. They get plenty of exercise outside on the farm throughout the day, however when they are in my house they are in a down stay/place command on their bed- or they are crated if I'm not around to supervise. Dogs left to do what they want in their home typically get into things they shouldn't and/or go to the bathroom in the house. Free roaming also gives dogs the idea that they can do what they want, and make their own (typically bad) decisions. Most of my board and trains come to me with a bite record- not due to abuse/neglect etc- due to thinking they are in charge of the house because they have had the freedom to make their own choices. Which in turn gives them the idea that they can try to bite someone (typically their owner) if they infringe on their rights to do what they want or ask them to do something they don't want to do.
