Check out the Summer 2013 issue to see my two features: "The Art of the Staycation" and "How to Survive Summer Blockbuster Withdrawal." Just got my Summer 2013 assignment for the magazine (possibly two pieces in one issue, if my pitch worked!), and I'm already looking for your input: What are my Durham Region-dwelling friends' favourite "stay-cation" places/activities? Any great inns, golf resorts, B&Bs, restaurants, and/or kid-friendly stuff in the area that you love to do over summer break? Fill me in!

From the desk of Heather Swanson: Everyone can relax now (I know you've all been waiting breathlessly): My feature piece on Seasonal Affective Disorder is in print and available both online and in glossy. Check out the snazzy artwork they did for it! I'm also grateful to my editors for both of their glowing-with-praise letters to open the issue. Go a-hunting at http://www.thelocalbizmagazine.ca/archives.htm for the Winter 2012 online archive, or seek out a physical copy. \o/
is pleased to announce that, with the advent of some small financial compensation for one area of my writing, I'm taking the "free" out of my lance & can now say the words "professional writer" if the mood strikes. \o/

FYI: The archives are up at The Local Biz Magazine, for those who'd requested a look at my piece on fashion in the Summer 2012 issue - http://www.thelocalbizmagazine.ca/archives.htm - and my feature on Seasonal Affective Disorder is in the can for Winter 2012, so keep an eye out for publication!
Well, at long last, the magazine article I was working on in the spring has been published and is available in a bunch of places! Many thanks to Diane, Erika, Mary Anne, Sharron, my editor Sherry, my family for putting up with my perfectionism tantrums, and of course everyone who helped me with research and proofreading (Alicia & Sephorah, among others). If you live in Durham Region, check out the website to find out where you can pick up a copy, as it's got lots of interesting local stuff between its covers. If you don't, and you want a copy, let me know! http://www.thelocalbizmagazine.ca
