‘The Ghosts That Haunt The Old Town’

The ghosts that haunt the old town are not here to give us fright.
They emerge from the shadows at sundown to meet the city night.
They look in vain it seems, to find each other in their ghostly rite,
it brings them out to search and drift about until the morning light.

They don’t know what was wrong, indeed they don’t know what was ever right,
We living feel them passing as we make our ways within the World of light.
Their paths are leading somewhere, though they cannot see our living strife.
Some of them seek their children, others seek their men, or seek a wife.

The future is the past, the living world is but a distant dream,
we cannot find them, as they are not living where the sirens scream.
They drift about the shadowland, the alleys of the big machines
our cities have become to their forgotten memories and dreams.

The ghosts that stalk the city must retreat upon the coming dawn,
They vanish like the smoke from the old buses horses once had drawn.
Their living selves are vanished from the human world of brains and brawn,
We would do well to remember their Souls as our own lives go on.
