Yellowhead Institute is hosting a Fire for the first time ever in Treaty 6 territory (Amiskwaciywaskahikan). As we approach the 150th anniversary of Treaty 6 (September 9, 2026 at Fort Pitt) and the Indian Act, join the Yellowhead Institute for a discussion exploring the enduring significance of Treaty relationships and the challenges facing Treaty implementation today.
Gather around the fire with renowned Treaty scholars Sharon Venne (Cree lawyer and Treaty Expert), Dr. Matthew Wildcat (Assistant Professor), and Janice Makokis (Assistant Professor) as they share insights grounded in oral histories, Indigenous legal traditions, and the original spirit and intent of Treaty 6. Together, they will examine contemporary issues affecting First Nations, including Treaty implementation, jurisdiction, governance, education, health, lands, and the ongoing work of decolonization and Nation rebuilding.
This timely discussion offers an opportunity to deepen understanding of Treaty relationships, reflect on the promises made at Treaty, and consider pathways forward for future generations.

Reconciliation has become part of the script of corporate Canada — but who benefits from the story being told? In a new Yellowhead Institute Special Report, Raylene Whitford examines how corporate reporting mechanisms, from sustainability reports to reconciliation action plans, shape carefully curated narratives about relationships with Indigenous Peoples.
Drawing on primary documents from 70% of the largest companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, the report argues that these reports are not neutral tools of transparency, but instruments of corporate power that transform contested social, ecological, and political realities into metrics and management strategies that protect ongoing extraction from Indigenous lands and resources.
Rather than accountability, corporate reporting becomes a performance of legitimacy that continues to limit Indigenous rights, jurisdiction, and self-determination.
