FGL11. Urban Design and Cities - Aug 1-12, 2016
Using Vancouver as an urban laboratory, learn the fundamentals of sustainable urban design, meet with working professionals, and apply what you learn to an existing neighbourhood through an integrated planning session (charrette). Urban design focuses on neighbourhoods, districts and entire cities, and unites all built environment professions, including urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, civil and municipal engineering.
This is an excellent course for students thinking about a future career in any of these professions, as well as land and real estate development or community and regional planning.
Instructor: Kari Dow (MLA, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, University of British Columbia) is an affiliate in the UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. A planner and urban designer, Kari has worked in both the private and public sector and remains actively involved in academia where she teaches, researches and presents her work on sustainable city building. Kari specializes in complex, action-oriented projects that successfully integrate planning and design at the site, district and neighbourhood scale.
