“Low dopamine routine” - Fact or Fiction.
Notes from Telus Health
If this is news to you, don’t worry, it was news to us too. The hashtag has 5.6 million views on TikTok (and counting) with many users claiming that whatever you do first thing in the morning will give your brain a dopamine hit that it will chase for the rest of the day. The idea is that avoiding that hit first thing in the morning will make for a more productive, less distracted day as you aren’t chasing that hit all day1.
There’s lots of evidence that a good morning routine can set you up well for the day. Cortisol, the stress hormone, naturally rises when we wake up. Doing things that reduce stress in the morning can make us feel good and might help us be more productive later on1. If you are excited about doing a chore or completing a task as part of your morning routine you could get a dopamine boost. But having or not having that dopamine boost doesn’t impact your productivity throughout the day.
The bottom line is that while we love morning routines we aren’t sold on the idea that dopamine - or lack thereof in the morning has anything to do with productivity throughout the day. Counsellors and dietitians are experts on setting you up for success in the morning with high protein breakfasts, mindfulness activities and other tips to get you up and enjoying your mornings.
