🌲 Big Lonely Doug – One of Vancouver Island’s Most Incredible Trees

Standing alone in the middle of a clear-cut near Port Renfrew, Big Lonely Doug is one of the largest Douglas fir trees in Canada. Estimated to be around 1,000 years old, this towering giant reaches about 66 metres (216 feet) into the sky and has a trunk nearly 12 metres in circumference.

What makes this tree so unforgettable isn’t just its size—it’s its story. In 2011, a logger recognized how extraordinary the tree was and marked it to be spared while the surrounding old-growth forest was harvested. Today, Big Lonely Doug stands as a powerful reminder of Vancouver Island’s ancient forests and has become a symbol of conservation and resilience.

Seeing this massive tree in person is a humbling experience. No photo can truly capture its scale until you’re standing at its base, looking up at nearly a millennium of history.
