Big day today! 🚧💦

We’re craning a 20-foot HydroPool Swim Spa from Urban Life Swim Spas in Steinbach into a brand-new backyard project.

This swim spa is being installed as part of a complete outdoor transformation featuring a new TREX Enhance Naturals deck by Blue Chip Decks, along with a fully redesigned backyard space.

Not every day you get to watch a crane fly a swim spa over houses and into its final home!

One of the biggest challenges with waterproof decks is movement. 💦💦💦

Unlike a traditional deck where a little shifting might not cause major issues, a waterproof deck relies on maintaining proper slope so water can drain away from the house. If the structure moves, even slightly, that slope can be disrupted.

In this case, the deck was built by another builder and is currently experiencing water pooling due to a lack of slope. The deck appears to be supported on a concrete slab, which may be heaving and pushing portions of the structure upward. When that happens, water no longer drains as intended.

In severe cases, improper drainage can cause water to flow back toward the home during heavy rainstorms. Over time, this can lead to moisture entering wall assemblies, hidden rot, and costly repairs. In less severe situations, it simply creates standing water on the deck, which is both unsightly and inconvenient.

Today we were on-site performing a consultation to determine the cause of the problem and explore possible repair options.

Unfortunately, there are no simple fixes when a waterproof deck loses its slope. Repairs often involve lifting the structure, trimming posts, or replacing support posts with adjustable foundations that allow the deck to be re-leveled correctly.

The best solution will depend on the original construction details and the type of foundation supporting the deck. Once we receive the construction plans and complete our investigation, we’ll have a much clearer picture of the appropriate path forward.
