The Darkest Material on Earth
Invented by British scientists, Vantablack is a super-black material that holds the record for being one of the darkest substances ever created by humans. It is made of a dense forest of vertical carbon nanotubes that are incredibly tiny. When light strikes Vantablack, instead of bouncing off, it becomes trapped between the tubes and is continually deflected until it is absorbed as heat. The material absorbs a mind-boggling 99.96% of all visible light. Looking at an object coated in Vantablack is a disorienting experience; because there is no reflected light, all three-dimensional texture is lost, appearing as a flat, infinite void.

An Unbelievable Historical Coincidence
Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were two of the most influential Founding Fathers of the United States, famously helping draft the Declaration of Independence. In a twist of fate that seems stranger than fiction, both men died on the exact same day: July 4, 1826. This date marked the exact 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Adams’ last words were reportedly, "Thomas Jefferson survives," completely unaware that Jefferson had actually passed away a few hours earlier in Virginia. Years later, James Monroe, the fifth US president, also died on a July 4th.

The Colossal Scale of the Giant Squid’s Eyes
Deep in the ocean's twilight zone, creatures must adapt to survive in near-total darkness. To capture what little light penetrates the deep sea, the giant squid has evolved the largest eyes of any living animal. A giant squid's eye can measure up to 11 inches (28 cm) in diameter—roughly the size of a standard dinner plate or a basketball. These massive organs are specifically designed to detect the faint, bioluminescent glow given off by deep-diving s***m whales, which are the giant squid's primary natural predators.
