Most people will be surprised when they learn how massive Africa really is. That’s because the world map most of us are familiar with—the Mercator projection—distorts the size of continents, especially as you move farther from the equator.

Created in the 16th century, this map makes regions like Europe and North America appear much larger than they actually are, while shrinking continents like Africa. In reality, Africa is enormous—large enough to fit the United States, China, India, and much of Europe within its borders.
