Meet the “Living Rock” cactus: Ariocarpus fissuratus var. lloydii 🌵
Native to the Chihuahuan Desert, this slow-growing, cryptic cactus features a blistered, reptile-like epidermis on its large tubercles and a massive taproot adapted to store water for survival in desert conditions.
Geophytic cacti and smaller succulents like these often adapt cryptic mimicry camouflage to survive in arid environments. By matching the colors and textures of desert substrates like limestone and granite, they blend seamlessly into the rocky landscape to hide from herbivores when not in flower.
It can take a decade for this species to flower from seed in cultivation, so patience is key for collectors! Always ethically source your plants to protect wild populations 🏜️🤝

The biggest Thelocactus rinconensis I’ve ever seen! And we were lucky enough to catch the entire population in flower 🤩 Colours ranged from pink to white and some morphs reminded me of Copiapoa species from Chile 🤯 Coahuila, Mexico 🇲🇽🏜️
