SUPPORTIVE TEACHING, A TOOL FOR SCIENCE ADVOCACY

A study by Brian E. Woolnough shows that supportive mathematics teaching in schools helps students to choose careers in sciences. Due to poor mathematics background and other reasons, some students in the life science departments at the university of Buea struggle with a course called MAT 211.

Their struggles are not often due to lack of seriousness or intelligence, for they excel in other courses, but rather because of poor background.

For these science lovers to remain in sciences, they must be helped! Motivated by this study, Science Catalysis has been organizing free tutorials for students facing challenges in this course for four months (124 students reached) which consummated with a revision class on Sunday 16, 2022 from 1 p.m. to 5p.m. in the university of Buea.

We wish our empowered students success as the face this ‘giant’ tomorrow.

International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development, 2022

Like never before, 2019 to 2021 have opened our eyes to the see the value of basic sciences in making our world better. Floods, droughts, Covid-19, wildfires, hurricanes, cyclones, food scarcity, among others that threatened human existence were mitigated and curbed with the help of basic sciences.

The discovery of Covid-19 vaccines, lunching of the James web telescope, near-true forecast of our climate system and so on are promising signs that our world would be even better in the future.

As we enter the year 2022, which is dedicated to basic sciences by UNESCO, we call on the whole world to collaborate with us—scientists to make our world a better place. You can do this by encouraging young people and girls/women in science, funding research, supporting advocacy initiatives, etc.

SCIENCE WRITING CONTEST

In preparation of the commemoration of World Science Day for Peace and Development, we call on all the secondary school students in Cameroon to participate in a essay writing contest on science and peace.

This is to help young people to appreciate the use of science in making our societies peaceful.
