Africa Environment Day was adopted in 2002 by the then Organization of African Unity Council of Ministers at their meeting in Durban. It was created with the aim of raising awareness and reminding all parties concerned of the urgency in taking into account environmental issues for the development of Africa. For the 2022 edition, the African Union to adopt as theme: "The role of sustainable environment in building resilience and combating desertification".
