“A corner, a roof, four walls, a door and a window, are they creating a room of my own? My own room is somewhere inside me, somewhere beyond my skin, beyond my body and beyond my mind. My own room is somewhere out of me, somewhere beyond the physical world, beyond the real world and beyond the virtual world. I am hovering somewhere between inside and outside. I am at the threshold of inside and outside play. I am looking for a place in between for landing”.

New week, new artist and the last if this first edition Our Own Room Art Project. We were with amazing artist and women in several geographies in Europe and America. Now, we are moving to Iran to finish this first edition. Thank you so much Mona for taking part and welcome to Our Own Room!

Mona Aghababee (b.1982, Esfahan) is an interdisciplinary artist, lives and works in Esfahan, Iran. Her work is in continuous communication with the objects from the everyday world and their dialogue with the body. She received her BA and MA in applied art from Art University of Tehran, Iran. Mona’s works have been exhibited widely around the world. She received the Damon Courtney Memorial Young Sculpture Prize from Sculpture by the Sea Festival, Sydney, 2009. She participated in National Sculpture Biennial of Tehran in 2011 and 2017 and also Urban Sculpture Biennial of Tehran, where she was awarded the first prize in the Fifth Urban Sculpture Biennial in 2016. Furthermore, She has received several full residency fellowships from the Sculpture Center (US), 2012, MacDowell Colony (US), 2014, Headlands Art Center (US), 2016, ACC Studio Program (GR) 2017, Beirut Art Residency (LB), 2019 and AABKC program (DK) 2019. She is also co-founder and co-director of Va space for contemporary art from 2014 in Esfahan. Va program hosts national and international artists, critics and writers to engage with the local community in a creative and artistic atmosphere.

Una stanza tutta per me è un libro, una matita, un quaderno e un gatto che sonnecchia sornione felice di un raggio di sole o di uno spicchio di luna

E' un posto dove cercare il ricongiungimento con se stesse, un posto al margine, dove trovare infine un equilibrio attraverso quello che sappiamo del dolore e della rabbia. E' un posto con la porta aperta per tutte quelle che ci vogliono stare, per tutti gli spazi possibili da creare. E' la stanza delle generazioni: quelle che la abitano, ne riempiono tutti gli angoli, fanno traboccare cassetti, colmano scatole, chiudono ante a fatica, accendono piccole luci ( Vivian Celestino Natsukashii ,architetta, scrittrice per l'infanzia).

La stanza tutta per me è un luogo in cui io posso essere la parte più oscura di me. Quella scomoda che gli altri non capiscono o giudicano. Un luogo in cui tutto è leggittimo. Pure la bruttezza.
