HE DIED AT 23. BUT HE LIVED TEN LIFETIMES.
Some men are born in a hurry.๐ฅ
As if they know, somewhere deep inside, that time will not be generous with them.
Salvador Sรกnchez was one of those men.
He grew up in Santiago Tianguistenco, a small village in Mexico. No money. No connections. Just two fists, a burning hunger, and a dream too big for the place where he was born.
He turned professional at 16.
Sixteen years old.
At that age, most boys are still thinking about school, girls, weekends.
He was already thinking about a world title.
His only defeat came early. A points decision against Antonio Becerra for the Mexican national bantamweight title.
Once. In 46 fights. Just once, the judges turned their backs on him.
He never gave them the chance again.
1980. Danny Lรณpez. The WBC featherweight title on the line.
Lรณpez was the champion. Tough, experienced, dangerous. Sรกnchez was not yet 21.
He stopped Lรณpez in round 13.
Then did it again in the rematch. Round 14 this time.
Mexico had a new hero.
But the real test came in August 1981.
Wilfredo Gรณmez.
33 fights. 32 KOs. 1 draw. No man had ever beaten him. Not one.
They called Gรณmez โBazooka.โ Because when he hit you, you didnโt get back up.
Sรกnchez dropped him in round one.
By round 8, it was over. Bert Sugar, the greatest voice in boxing history, called it the greatest fight in Hispanic history.
His last fight was against Azumah Nelson. Madison Square Garden. July 1982.
Nelson was a future Hall of Famer. A warrior from Ghana who would become a legend in his own right. For 14 rounds, he pushed Sรกnchez to his absolute limit. The hardest night of his career.
But in round 15, Sรกnchez finished it. Technical knockout. Forty-four wins. Thirty-two stoppages. One loss. One draw.
Undisputed. Undeniable.
Three weeks later, he got into his Porsche 928 on a Mexican highway.
The early hours of the morning.
He was 23 years old.
They say his mother would slip a palm cross into his shoes before every fight.
A symbol of triumph. Of resurrection.
They also say he often spoke of not living long. That he had even described how he wanted his funeral.
Some men donโt truly belong to this world.
They come, they burn, they go.
And what they leave behind, no death can ever extinguish.
Salvador Sรกnchez.
23 years old. World champion. Eternal.
