Local learning ecosystems idea, can radically transform the way education takes place in learning contexts. At the heart of an ecological perspective on learning is the need to make connections across formal, informal, and everyday learning (Bevan, 2016).

Local learning ecosystems comprise diverse combinations of providers (schools, businesses, community organizations as well as government agencies), creating new learning opportunities and pathways to success (Hannon et al., 2019).

The complexity and uncertainty of work and life in the 21st century requires systems to be resilient. People are required to show adaptive capacity and see how their own learning ecologies can fit the greater puzzle, their workplace, their family, their community and the society at large.

Educational empowerment expands beyond school grounds, in that learning can be both synchronous (scheduled classes, virtual classrooms) and asynchronous (anytime, anywhere). Emerging models try to propose the ideal route for meaningful ubiquitous and hybrid learning, as a response to this evolving reality.

Participatory design and co-design of learning, are key drivers in local learning ecosystems, and hold promise to prepare all learners to become future-ready, through incorporating understandings of sociocultural and holistic conceptualizations of pedagogy as cultural intervention in human development.
