Students for Impact
Helping students at Charles University (and beyond!) to explore ways to maximize their positive impact. Part of the effective altruism network. 💡

This month, our plans are a bit different!
In our workshop on prioritization, we have discussed some reasons why the problem of AI moral value alignment is considered a particularly impactful path within the effective altruism community. Since the Days of AI have come, we've partnered with Effective Altruism Czechia to organize two events around AI safety. Sorry, this time both events will be in Czech!
On Friday 7, we'll be co-hosting a panel discussion about the new book If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies by Eliezer Yudkowsky - the most influential (and pessimistic) theorist of AI existential risk. Is there a reason for concern? Panelists include the technical AI safety researcher Vojtěch Kovařík (ČVUT) and the philosopher of AI Ondřej Krása (UPCE). See more details here:

What can and should governments do about these risks? Join us for a discussion with Kristina Fort, who is a researcher in AI governance at the LSE on Wednesday 12. See more details here: https://www.facebook.com/events/25918494557739396
(Note the originally planned event on existential risks is cancelled)

Asteroids, AI, pandemics - how do humanity's ultimate enemies rank? Often, the biggest questions seem the hardest to answer. Nevertheless, in the last 15 years, some of the most impressive researchers have tried and came up with some very concrete and unexpected answers. And you might be surprised, just how much this emerging science can be advanced from almost every field.

Hi! I'm Daniel and I'm just kicking off Students for Impact, where we want to help Prague students explore how they can contribute to the world's biggest problems.
What does that actually mean? To a large extent, that's an open question that depends on your philosophy, abilities and priorities. However, you would probably be very surprised to learn just how far you can go with the evidence and frameworks that people around the effective altruism movement have gathered in the last 15 years.
And who are you? What does positive impact mean to you and what should our group focus on? Come tell me on our first event! It will be the first meeting in a series where we will discuss the world's biggest challenges and how we can address them. Maybe it seems like you can't do much, but even as a student, you can start exploring your career fit and shaping your research focus - with the choice of your thesis, your field of study or a job. With regard to the potential of your impact, these are perhaps the most consequential decisions you will make - so we'd love to help you think them through more systematically.
Ready to meet up? See you next Thursday at 18.30 in Kampus Hybernská (Sál B.1)! Below, you can see some details, including some reading recommendations. If you want to make the most of it, check them out beforehand and feel welcome to raise any tensions you have with the ideas. https://www.facebook.com/events/1282443203083462/
If you can't make it this time but would like to join in the future vote for when should we have our future regular meetings here: https://forms.gle/i8LexerzaxxHFskv7 If you'd also like to tell us which topics to focus on, shoot us an e-mail at [email protected]

Students for Impact will hard launch in September! Meanwhile, here are some of our tips for building a career with a positive impact 🚀
Designing a high-impact thesis ☄️
Your thesis can be more than just an academic requirement — it can be your first meaningful contribution to solving pressing global problems. In this interactive workshop, you'll learn how to design a high-impact thesis that aligns with your values, and contributes to some of the world's crucial challenges.
Our workshop will aim to:
Introduce you to how experts think about comparing global priorities
Help you clarify your mission and areas that best match your skills
Guide you to map out a Theory of Change for top thesis ideas
Not sure what any of that means? Don't worry and come anyway!
This event is organized in cooperation with Effective Thesis, an NGO dedicated to empowering students to focus their thesis and careers on what truly matters. The workshop will be facilitated by their CEO, Christine Tan.
