THE LOCAL CHURCH

ACTS 14:23
And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed. (KJV)

We said that the church of Jesus Christ was built or formed upon his resurrection. Anybody who believes the gospel of Christ becomes born into the church of Christ. This is the universal church of Christ where every saved person is a part. This is called the body of Christ.

Ephesians 5:23,
“For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body”.

We are members of the body of Christ. The universal Church is the body of all believers irrespective of location, age, tribe or language. As long as you have believed the gospel, you are a member of the church of Christ. You don’t become a member of the church of Christ by natural birth, inheritance or family lineage. The church of Christ is without spot, blemish. It is holy and perfect and sanctified,

Ephesians 5:27,
“That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish”.

This means that as members of the body of Christ, we are holy and without blemish. We have what is called, the local church. This is the assembly of believers based on location or leadership. Most times, people call the local church a denomination. We have many such assemblies of believers identified by church or ministry names. In our opening text, we have examples of such local assemblies where Apostle Paul ordained elders to oversee such local assemblies or churches. What makes the local church is not the physical building but the people. Where two or three are gathered, we can have a local assembly.

A local assembly can meet in any location; a house, under a tree, a living room, an auditorium or a park. The early church used to meet in houses for fellowship.

1 Corinthians 16:19,
“The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house”.

At present times, we have local assemblies that meet in houses, classrooms, under sheds or canopies. We also have mega local assemblies that have big halls and auditoriums.

Every believer must belong to a local assembly. To be a member of the universal church without belonging to a local church where you are pastored, made accountable and to serve other believers is disobedience. It is in the local church that we are fed with God’s word to grow. Our spiritual growth will result in being responsible and accountable.

No believer can grow and minister to other believers in isolation. There is the apostolic pattern where people who believed the gospel were placed in the local church.

Every believer, minister, evangelist, missionary, prophet, and gospel singer must belong to a local church where they serve and are held accountable. Somebody should be helping you to grow spiritually and you must also be helping somebody to grow spiritually. You must submit to the accountability and authority of the local church irrespective of your spiritual gift, wealth, popularity, education or position in society.
