Joey Ramone, 1988.

Here‘s Joey with a 16 ounce Budweiser can in his Tokyo Hotel room, October 1988.

Joey stopped drinking alcohol a few months later, after he badly fractured his ankle under the influence. Photographer Bob Gruen remembers the incident:

„I was with Joey the night he had his last drink. We were at the bar at Wetlands, and my girlfriend said, ‘Let’s have some tequila.’ Since we were with Joey, the bartender came over and poured us all mega-sized shots of tequila. Joey picked up the glass and said, ‘I know I’m gonna regret this.’

The crowd was thrilled when Joey came onstage to join Raging Slab for their encore song, but startled when, coming off the stage, Joey slipped on the steps and hit the ground, twisting his ankle. A few hours later, stepping out of a cab at an after-hours joint, Joey said: I really hurt my ankle. I think it’s starting to swell up. At that point it was 4 a.m. Joey called Monte, who got out of bed to come and take him home. The Ramones’ tour had to be postponed because Joey had broken his ankle.

The next time I saw Joey, he said he decided not to drink anymore. As the years went on, I never saw Joey Ramone with another drink in his hand.“

Johnny, Joey & fans, 1977.

Here‘s Johnny and Joey outside Eric‘s in Liverpool, mingling with their fans, May 19, 1977 - Joey‘s 26th birthday.

Photographer Ian Dickson spent the afternoon with the Ramones, taking pictures around Mathew Street, outside the venue. On return, the band signed autographs and took some time for their fans.

Leter that day, Dickson managed to get some of the most iconic shots of the Punk era, when a fan jumped on stage, playing air guitar while the band relentlessly blasted through their set.

Here‘s the final Ramones line-up with a young fella in Montreal, July 4, 1990.

The guitar and bass were signed for B.A.D.D. (Bikers Against Drunk Drivers), backstage at La Ronde in Montreal, where the Ramones performed as part of the Escape From New York tour.

B.A.D.D. aims to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving, frequently operating through national campaigns and charity raffles, including signed instruments.
