Microbiology Monday: Phenotypic variants of bacteria are often found in routine diagnostics. While it’s been debated whether all phenotypic variants should be tested for antimicrobial susceptibility, microbiologists recently found that only one isolate per phenotypic variant could be tested to guide antimicrobial treatment of patients. In this study, they examined all phenotypic variants from routine diagnostics from the University Hospital Münster, Germany for a year and quantified the proportion of variants that had different antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. They also identified species and antimicrobial compounds that were most affected.
