Given the current practice of using drones for warfare in both the gulf and in Ukraine, this song from our first record seems oddly prescient.

The last song from our new EP is perhaps the most radical yet. The drive of the song is totally inspired by Hawkwind’s Master Of The Universe or Brainstorm - just a leading snare and incessant krautrock-inspired beat. Melodically there’s another Hawkwind connection - Hassan I Sabbah, which features beautiful violin from Simon House (RIP) and amazing lyrics from Robert Calvert. Of ocurse, it's the Phrygian mode that brings it all together and heightens the decadence of the subject matter. For the middle section, we went a bit prog as well, which was fun. Lyrically, it’s about privilege and the fact that these people only ever fall on cushions. No consequences. Epstein files anyone?

Let's dive into track 5 on our latest EP - I Want More Cows. The title of this song refers to the Sanskrit description of the craving for war. A lot of the inspiration for the lyrics comes from Smedley Butler as well. From a musical/production side, there are a few interesting points to cover. The main synth in the verse parts was inspired by the synth in Dutch group De Staat’s song Phoenix, mixed in with some background vocal shouts in this case. Rhythmically, it’s also interesting because many of the stresses fall just before or just after the one, adding tension to the whole song. And finally, the instrumental break in the middle section includes Lindsay playing the guitar with a toothbrush, which is definitely a Poor Teddy first (and last?)!

Today, let’s dive into track 4 from our latest EP. It’s a tale of domestic schism, so obviously not for the fainthearted. On top of the disturbing subject matter is the fact that it’s based around what’s known in the musicology business as a half-whole diminished scale. It’s a weird 8-note scale used a lot in jazz. And when you build chords from that scale, you get all the really interesting minors and majors that make up the song. The walking bass parts highlight the scale as well. Which makes it weird, but we hope, cool. As far as the sound goes, it’s all a bit garage and a bit punk, shades of goth maybe, which we like a lot. And it’s only two and a half minutes long.

We’re giving some background info and production details about our latest record. Today, we’re going to talk about track 3 - Scallywag. Thank you, Mr. Bookchin and Mrs. Carson. If only we’d listened. Scallywags was the name for British Resistance fighters in case of a WW2 invasion by Exxon - or should we say the N***s? That’s why it’s the name of this cautionary tale about the climate crisis, and our Don’t Look Up style reaction to it. This is another song Lindsay wrote on the bass. Dave’s retro organ gives it a bit of a Booker T. & The M.G.s feel. The breathy, Eastern-influenced intro (and breakdown) and the nonchalant backing vocals add another layer of texture to the tune.

We’re taking a look at the songs from our new EP. Toda it’s the turn of the second of second track, Become The Creature. Nip and tuck, wtf. Soft Machine fans will remember Esther’s Nose Job. Punks might turn to Dead Kennedys’ Trust Your Mechanic - and that’s actually referenced in the last verse of the song, in the same breath as The Rocky Horror Show and its double feature picture show. This is also a nod to Robert Calvert's We Like To Be Frightened from Hype. The song was inspired by watching The Substance and body horror is at its core, despite there being no explicit nods to Cronenberg and his ilk. Musically it’s built around a simple beat, a walking bass and a melodic synth line, with some great backing vocals from Carol.
