As the new year is upon us, we find ourselves reflecting on the past year and the strides we made in increasing the participation of women and incorporating gender perspectives in all peace and security efforts. We look forward to keeping up the momentum in 2021 and ensuring a peaceful and inclusive Africa someday.

Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) Ghana joined WILPF in 2011 and officially became a Section in 2015. The Section advocates against violence against women and girls, and promotes girl’s education, and UNSCR1325 Resolution, advocates against militarism and is an active promoter of human rights at national and regional levels.

Today we want to highlight the significant work of FemWise-Africa. The Network of African Women in Conflict Prevention and Mediation, better known as FemWise-Africa, is an African Union initiative established on 4 July 2017. The Network aims to strengthen the role of women in conflict prevention, mediation processes and peace stabilisation efforts through capacity-building and networking. When women participate in peace processes, it paves the way for increased political participation. In Kenya, women actively participated in key processes after electoral violence in 2007. This included the drafting of the new constitution, which was adopted in 2010. The constitution, among others, imposes a one-third quota for female representation in elected and appointed positions.
