The Joint Retreat of the AU Peace Fund Governance Bodies marked a significant institutional milestone in strengthening African ownership of peace financing and advancing the operation of the Peace Fund.

H.E. Amb. Selma Malika Haddadi, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, underscored the importance of institutional coherence and strategic coordination.

H.E. further highlighted the importance of strengthening prevention, early action, and resilience-building in response to increasingly complex security challenges across the continent, while reaffirming the African Union Commission’s commitment to a stronger, more transparent, and more resilient Peace Fund that delivers measurable peace dividends for African citizens.

The African Union Peace and Security Council and the Peace Fund’s Board of Trustees Joint Meeting underscored the growing momentum toward strengthening African ownership and financial sustainability in peace and security efforts across the continent.

Discussions focused on the Peace Fund’s operational progress, strengthening coordination between Board of trustees and the PSC, governance priorities, resource mobilization, and ways to enhance its long term impact and responsiveness.

Participants also reflected on the importance of stronger partnerships, improved implementation mechanisms, and greater transparency and accountability to build confidence among Member States.

The session reaffirmed a shared commitment to advancing a more resilient and effective Peace Fund in support of peace and stability across Africa.

The AU Peace Fund held its first-ever Joint Retreat in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, bringing together its Governance Bodies in person for the first time since full operationalization.

During the opening ceremony of the AU Peace Fund Joint Retreat, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, emphasized the critical link between peace, stability, and sustainable development across Africa.

The gathering of the Board of Trustees, Independent Evaluation Group, Executive Management Committee, Fund Managers, and Peace Fund Secretariat created an important opportunity for better coordination and shared strategic reflection.

In the Board of Trustees deliberations ahead of the official opening of the AU Peace Fund Joint Retreat, the Board of Trustees also reviewed ongoing procurement processes related to Fund Managers and Custodian arrangements, highlighting the importance of improving efficiency, transparency, and institutional responsiveness.

Participants emphasized the need for streamlined operational procedures that support the timely and effective implementation of the Peace Fund’s mandate.

Members also explored the proposed establishment of a fourth Peace Fund implementation window dedicated to mobilizing ODA-eligible funding exclusively for conflict prevention and capacity-building activities across the continent.

The Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) engagement under the AU Peace Fund continued with a strong focus on operational readiness and strategic alignment.

Discussions centered on risk management policy, the selection process for fund managers and the custodian bank, and the core mandates of the Independent Evaluation Group. Members also worked towards shaping the Group’s annual work plan, ensuring a clear, coordinated, and result-oriented approach to independent evaluation going forward.

The members of IEG engaged in in-depth discussions on key operational pillars, including resource mobilization strategy, financing and reporting SOPs, due diligence and compliance frameworks, and modalities for monitoring and evaluation.

The Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees of the AU Peace Fund convened during the Pre-Retreat engagements to review fiduciary oversight, governance compliance, and the performance of Fund Managers.

The meeting also served as an opportunity to engage with both internal stakeholders and external partners, while assessing ongoing institutional processes aimed at strengthening accountability, transparency, and effective governance across the Peace Fund framework.
